Action for Afghan Women is working to provide quality healthcare to women in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. As a 501c3 nonprofit, volunteer-run organization, our goal is to bring an American-trained doctor to the region and build a clinic for her to serve thousands of women and children. The doctor is from the area, so she understands the dire need to provide health care to these women.
In Afghanistan, it is typically not considered culturally appropriate for women to see male doctors. That's why female doctors are necessary to provide healthcare to women and girls. An all-women-run clinic will provide a safe environment, ensuring women receive the necessary and deserving medical care for their physical and mental health.
AFAW is putting an Afghan woman through medical school so she can return home and be the first U.S.-trained female doctor in Southern Afghanistan.
AFAW is also building a medical clinic in the Helmand province of Afghanistan where this doctor and others will provide healthcare to more than 24,000 women annually.
