EVENTS

We are constantly planning events in the Aspen area and beyond to share our mission with others, educate about Afghan culture, and enjoy authentic Afghan cuisine. Guests come away from these gatherings understanding more about Afghanistan and AFAW’s mission and feeling eager to be a part of the change needed in the country. With each gathering, we also try to bring hope for Afghanistan, which is so necessary right now.

AFGHAN DINNER

Pitkin County Library - November 2023

We hosted the evening in the Dunaway Room at the Pitkin County Library. Mariam came to town and cooked a traditional Afghan meal with several of our volunteers. After dinner, Mariam gave an update on her medical school journey and the progress of the clinic in Helmand.

INTIMATE DINNERS

Aspen, Colorado - November 2023

AFAW hosted two intimate Afghan dinners at a house in the Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado. Mariam and AFAW founder Paula Nirschel cooked traditional Afghan meals for guests to experience. They were able to learn and ask many questions about Afghanistan because of the intimate setting. If you’re interested in having a small Afghan dinner like this to experience and learn more about Afghanistan and AFAW, contact us!

AFGHAN DINNER BENEFIT

Aspen, Colorado - August 2016

Mariam and several volunteers prepared traditional Afghan dishes for a second year in a row for more than 75 attendees gathered at a house on Red Mountain in Aspen. After dinner, AFAW founder Paula Nirschel chatted with Mariam about the challenges facing women in Afghanistan and her education.

AFGHAN DINNER

Aspen, Colorado - September 2015

This was the first official event of AFAW. More than 50 attendees gathered at a house on Red Mountain in Aspen to enjoy traditional Afghan dishes made by Mariam and several volunteers. After dinner, AFAW founder Paula Nirschel chatted with Mariam about the challenges facing women in Afghanistan.

AFGHANISTAN: A REASON FOR OPTIMISM

The Aspen Chapel - August 2013

This informational talk about Afghanistan helped launch AFAW. Mariam came to Aspen to speak about her home in southern Afghanistan and how she wanted to help women there. Paula Nirschel shared her experience being in Afghanistan several times and working for the country for more than two decades. Nearly 50 people attended this event, and they were able to talk with Mariam and Paula about their expertise and what can be done from here to better the lives of the women there.
